Be Careful What You Sign

It seems almost impossible that there would be that level of (saying it kindly) nefarious folks, who would spend their day trying to take advantage of our loved ones, but they are out there, and they are working hard trying to profit from our pain. We must make a point of telling our loved ones that there is no shame in telling any salesperson, “I cannot sign anything until I talk it over with my family,” or better yet “…until I speak with my attorney.” Read more

Break the Glass

I've had a few conversations recently about what it takes to become a "successful caregiver." This is an important conversation for us to have in this country at this time. Talking about what makes a successful family caregiver focuses on the needs of the caregiver. Read more

Caring R Us, Incorporated

I have a confession to make. I am addicted to books by business gurus. You know the type, “Swim with sharks without ripping your pajamas;” “Learn to better yourself in every way in 200 pages;” “The greatest business advice you will ever buy is within these pages.” Read more

Choosing Well: Long-Term Care Facilities

“I will fearlessly acknowledge when providing care for my family member becomes impossible, either because of his or her condition or my own, and seek other solutions for my family member's care needs.” Read more

The Fearless Caregiver Manifesto

If we, as caregivers, are going to be treated as a member of our loved one’s care team, we need a set of principles. Luckily for us, caregivers do have a set of principles, though they are not as widely known. Read more

The Time is Now (To Be Prepared To Care)

When my dad became ill in 1990, I would come home to visit almost every month. But it was not until returning to Florida full-time in 1994 to help care for my grandparents that I knew what a “black hole” my mom had been living in those past few years. She had become nurse, insurance expert, medications manager, and social worker. Each day created more opportunities for fear, stress, and depression. Read more

The Tool Kit

Gramp was like most of us. He knew he needed to prepare for future needs and plan for adversity. He had much of his financial tool kit filled with stocks and bonds, investment properties, and an up-to-date will. However, he realized too late that there was a staggering price to himself and his family for neglecting to prepare an appropriate long-term care program. Read more
