DEMENTIA

Treatment

Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB)

At present there is no cure for dementia with Lewy bodies. However, medications and alternative treatments may relieve symptoms such as depression and hallucinations. However, medications to relieve hallucinations may increase muscle tremors and stiffness.

Vascular Dementia

While no treatment can reverse damage that has already been done, medicines to control high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes can be prescribed. Daily prevention of stroke is important. A healthy diet, exercise, and avoidance of smoking and excessive alcohol may also lessen the risk of further strokes.

Pick&'s Disease

There is no cure for Pick's disease. Medications can sometimes be used to treat symptoms; however, secondary symptoms such as depression can be helped by medication.

Huntington's Disease

There is no cure for Huntington's disease. Medications to treat some symptoms for some people, or secondary symptoms, may be used.

Parkinson's disease

Medication may be used to ease the symptoms of Parkinson disease. These medicines will attempt to either replace or mimic dopamine, which improves the coordination and mobility symptoms associated with Parkinson disease.
