DIABETES

Overview

Diabetes is a condition that prevents your body from properly making or using insulin, which causes your blood sugar to be high.

Insulin is a hormone in your body made by the pancreas. Insulin helps glucose (sugar) get into your cells—so you have energy. People with diabetes either don’t make enough insulin, or the insulin doesn’t work the way it should—which means the glucose cannot get into the cells. For more information, go to National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
