DIARRHEA AND CONSTIPATION

Overview

Diarrhea

Diarrhea refers to loose, watery stools (bowel movements) occurring more than three times in one day. Diarrhea may make it difficult for a person to leave the general vicinity of a bathroom. Diarrhea often arrives unexpectedly and may be accompanied by uncomfortable cramping.

Constipation

Constipation refers to not being able to go to the bathroom, and, when going, passing small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. When people are constipated, they may feel bloated, sluggish, and generally uncomfortable. Performing a bowel movement may be painful.
