HEART DISEASE

Overview

Heart disease, including congestive heart failure, is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. More than 5 million Americans live with congestive heart failure, and 550,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

The risk of heart disease increases as we age, and is also associated with a family history. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes, and lack of exercise often contribute to heart disease.
