INSOMNIA

Types

Two types of insomnia exist: primary and secondary.

  • Primary insomnia is caused by stress, jet lag, outside factors such as noise or light, and other occurrences not directly related to a medical condition.
  • Secondary insomnia means that the inability of sleep is caused by a health condition such as depression, or is caused by a medical treatment or drug substance.

Insomnia may be acute or chronic.

  • Acute insomnia refers to “on-off” insomnia, which means it may occur off and on, but generally does not last more than 1-3 days.
  • Chronic insomnia may be caused by depression and other health conditions and requires treatment.
