Asthma
Symptoms of asthma include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Wheezing
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty performing activities that require exertion (such as lifting a chair, or walking up stairs)
See your doctor is you suspect asthma at any time.
Bronchitis
Symptoms of bronchitis include:
- A cough
- A mild fever
- A general feeling of tiredness
- Pain in the chest under the breastbone that is worse when breathing deeply
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Hoarseness

Pneumonia
Symptoms include:
- Cough, often producing
- Fever
- Shaking
- Chills
- Shortness of breath
- Chest wall pain that is made worse by coughing or breathing in
- Fast heartbeat
- Fatigue
- Sickness
Emphysema
Symptoms may include:
- Long-term (chronic) cough
- Chronic mucus (sputum)
- Repeated episodes of acute bronchitis
- Shortness of breath that is persistent and gets worse, occurs during exercise, and worsens during respiratory infections, such as colds.
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis tends to show symptoms in youth such as coughing up blood, or thick mucus in sputum; it is normally detected in childhood.
