LUNG DISEASE

Treatment

Asthma

Asthma treatment may last a person’s lifetime. Treatment focuses on medications that control inflammation, coughing, breathlessness at night, as well as avoiding asthma triggers, which may include dust, smoke, or heat. People may also outgrow childhood asthma, or develop asthma later in life.

Bronchitis

Treatment for bronchitis usually includes taking steps to reduce cough, fever, and pain. Prescription medications, such as antibiotics, may help. Most cases of acute bronchitis go away in two to three weeks. Some doctors recommend sleep, lots of water, and staying indoors. Be sure to check with your doctor for treatment.

Lung Cancer

For lung cancer treatment information, please see our section on cancer, or speak with your health care professional.

Pneumonia

Doctors may use antibiotics to treat pneumonia caused by bacteria. If the cause is a virus, a doctor may wish to monitor you or your elderly loved one in a hospital setting, as antibiotics will not be beneficial. Speak with your doctor for more information.

Emphysema

Emphysema cannot be cured, but it can be managed. Treatment includes slowing down the disease progression by avoiding tobacco smoke, smoke from fire, dust, pollution, and reducing and controlling shortness of breath and coughing. Be sure to speak with your doctor about treatment for emphysema.

Cystic Fibrosis

Most people have been consistently treated for their cystic fibrosis since one year of age. Continuation of any immunizations and treatments is necessary.
