OSTEOPOROSIS

Overview

Osteoporosis literally means “porous bone.” Just as the name describes, the condition refers to decreased bone mass and actual deterioration of the bone. People who have osteoporosis have an increased risk of hip, spine, and wrist factures.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, 10 million people in the United States alone (men and women of all ages) currently have osteoporosis. Low bone mass affects another 34 million in this country.

According to a 2004 U.S. Surgeon General's report, women are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis then men. Women of all ages need calcium, vitamin D, and exercise to maintain everyday bone health and help to prevent osteoporosis.
