OSTEOPOROSIS

Treatment

The best “treatment” of osteoporosis is prevention. Weight-bearing exercise and proper nutrition (such as getting the recommended daily allowance of calcium and vitamin D), can help increase bone density. Proper nutrition and being aware of safety hazards can also work to reduce the symptoms of osteoporosis.

Your physician may also prescribe a medication to slow or stop bone loss, increase bone density, and reduce fracture risk.

Nutrition: Getting a balanced diet full of vitamins, minerals, and plenty of water is the first step to healthy bones and a healthy body. Calcium and vitamin D are particularly needed for strong bones. You can find calcium in all dairy products such as cheese, and you can find calcium and vitamin D in fortified milk. Many delicious calcium supplements exist—be sure to check with your doctor about supplements he or she recommends.

Exercise: Exercise not only improves your bone health, but it increases muscle strength, coordination, and balance. Weight-bearing exercise such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, and dancing, and sports such as volleyball, skiing, basketball, soccer, and tennis, force the body to work against gravity and help to create strong, healthy bones. If you are already diagnosed with osteoporosis, less strenuous exercises (that are still weight-bearing) include walking, stretching while standing, and Hatha yoga.

Therapeutic Medications: Several medicines are currently approved by the FDA for preventing and treating osteoporosis. Check with your doctor for specific medications and treatment.
