COLD EXPOSURE

Cold Exposure/ Hypothermia Symptoms

If your loved one has been exposed to cold temperature, bring him or her to a warm area as soon as possible. Check for signs of hypothermia.

According to WebMD, the early signs of hypothermia include:

  • Shivering
  • Cold, pale, or blue-gray skin
  • Lack of interest or concern (apathy)
  • Poor judgment
  • Mild unsteadiness in balance or walking
  • Slurred speech
  • Numb hands and fingers and difficulty performing tasks

If your loved one has signs of hypothermia, contact a medical professional or dial 9-1-1 immediately.

Cold Exposure Treatment

Cold Exposure Treatment includes:

  1. Move your loved one into a warm room as soon as possible.
  2. Be alert for breathing difficulties; start rescue breathing techniques if necessary.
  3. Remove wet or frozen clothing. Immediately rewarm your loved one by wrapping him or her in blankets or placing him or her in tub of warm, not hot, water. Dry your loved one thoroughly after the bath.
  4. Give your loved one hot liquids to drink, (not alcohol).
  5. Follow treatment for frostbite.
  6. Consult professional medical help if your loved one has breathing problems or is not responsive to the above treatment.
