If your loved one has symptoms of a heat stroke, you must take action quickly.

  1. Get professional medical help immediately. Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency medical services phone number.
  2. Lower body temperature quickly by placing your loved one in partially filled tub of cool, not cold, water (avoid over-cooling). Briskly sponge your loved one’s body until his or her body temperature is reduced; then towel your loved one dry. If a bath tub is not available, wrap your loved one in cold, wet sheets in a well-ventilated room or use fans and air conditioners until his or her body temperature is reduced.
  3. DO NOT give your loved one stimulating beverages, such as coffee, tea, or soda.
