SUNBURN: TREATING & PREVENTING

Sunburn Symptoms

Sunburn symptoms include:

Skin redness, dry skin, and skin irritation. It may take up to 24 hours for people to experience symptoms of sunburn after sun exposure without protection (or without adequate protection).

People with sunburn may have skin peeling and flaky skin, as well as skin that is extremely warm to the touch. Sunburn can be very painful.

Severe sunburn may involve blistering of the skin, dehydration, and infection. These symptoms may quickly progress to nausea, chills, flu-like symptoms, and headaches.

Sunburn Treatment

Sunburn treatment includes:

  1. Cool your loved one as rapidly as possible by applying cool, damp cloths all over the area or immersing your loved one entirely in cool ( not cold) water.
  2. Give your loved one cool fluids to drink, such as water.
  3. Treat your loved one for first or second degree burns.
  4. Treat for shock if necessary.
  5. Get professional medical help immediately for severe cases.
