My son loves construction trucks. Some parents take their kids to the park and the zoo; I take my son to construction sites. One day we came upon a mammoth project, and my son wanted to get a closer look. I said, “I would love to, but look at that sign. It says ‘Do not enter.’” His toddler response: “Take down sign.”
You might feel like there are “Do not enter” signs in the portals of hospitals and doctors offices. You might feel like the outsider…the intruder.
Let me remind you that the health care system is set up to serve you and your loved ones. You are the guests of honor! Take down the imaginary sign.
A Warmer Doctor’s Office
Here are some tips to get a warmer welcome at the doctor’s office or hospital:
- Learn the names of the office staff. A warm smile and “Hi, Mary! Did your grandson have a good field trip?” to the front desk staff may help you get the VIP treatment.
- Tell the staff something that they’re doing right for which you’re grateful. Maybe it’s the new magazines, or the cloth mitts over the stirrups on the exam table, or simply that the doctor’s office is running on time!
- Imagine yourself as part of the team. Some people think of “patient advocacy” as putting on the boxing gloves and going a few rounds with the doctor. I think of it as putting on the team jersey and playing instead of warming the bench.
- State your needs clearly. “Could I please get the referral form for the upcoming cardiology visit for Dad?”
- Bring a thank you note or treats to the hard-working staff.
The doctors, nurses, and other members of your healthcare team may wear white coats, but underneath they’re people just like you. The same things you do to forge strong relationships in your personal and professional life will help you get a warm welcome at the doctor’s office.
