ADULT DAY CARE

Overview

Adult day care refers to short-term environments where a senior can spend a day, an afternoon, or a weekend with other seniors and trained staff.

At adult day care, seniors are able to interact with other seniors with similar interests, play games, participate in arts and crafts activities, watch movies, and more.

Adult day care centers usually have registered nurses on staff in addition to other health care aides and assistants. A staff physician may or may not be on call or at the facility. Adult day care is beneficial for both seniors and their caregivers. Respite care is fundamental for caregivers, and adult day care enables caregivers to take a break for an afternoon, an entire day, or a whole weekend (or more). Seniors enjoy the time spent with others of their age as well—and sometimes an elderly loved one needs time away from his or her caregiver too.

Benefits of Adult Day Care

  • Daily living services: Assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, drinking, and toileting as needed
  • Food services: Nutritious meals are provided for the length of time your loved one stays at day care
  • Social activities: Social and recreational activities, arts and crafts, movies, and more
  • Healthcare: Medical supervision and assistance, on-site nurses and physicians, health care aides, and other services as needed
  • Respite: Elder day care enables both caregiver and care recipient to take a break from the other

Be sure to ask each individual facility you are considering which services are included, and whether or not supplemental services may be purchased to complement the specific care and services required.
