NURSING HOMES

Overview

Nursing homes are facilities geared toward elderly adults who need full-time care. When your loved one cannot walk up or down the stairs, handle finances, or perform toileting activities on his own, you may choose a nursing home.

In a nursing home, a registered nurse works with a physician to provide care on a regular basis. Unlike other housing options, nursing homes admit residents only with a physician's order.

Benefits of Nursing Homes

  • Daily living services: Assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, drinking, and toileting.
  • Daily task services: Housekeeping and personal laundry services.
  • Food services: Three meals a day, either in a dining room, or in your loved one’s room.
  • Safety services: 24-hour security and staff availability; social and recreational activities.
  • Healthcare: Medical supervision and assistance, on-site nurses and physicians, healthcare aides, and other services.

Be sure to ask each individual facility you are considering which services are included, and whether or not supplemental services may be purchased to complement the specific care and services required.
